A Reflection on Wedding Films
I’ve (Simon, Lead Cinematographer) been reflecting a lot on why I create wedding films and what they really mean, not just in the moment, but as something that can last far beyond the day itself. Over a decade ago, I worked with a bride who experienced a heartbreaking tragedy after her wedding. Seeing how much comfort she found in her filmed memories reminded me that these are more than just wedding videos: they’re personal time capsules that preserve fleeting moments of joy, friendship, and love.
I still remember a time in my youth when I barely thought about the future. It’s probably normal to feel invincible when you’re younger, there’s a certain naivety in believing there’s always more time. But as I grew older, got married, and became a parent, I realised how quickly time slips away and how essential it is to hold onto the special moments we share with the people we love.
Of course, life has its darker sides, loss and grief can strike at any time, shaking our entire world. That contrast between joy and sadness, between gain and loss, made me appreciate even more the power of preserving celebrations on film. It’s one of the reasons I keep doing what I do: to capture life’s best moments and ensure they remain vivid, even as the years go by.
Looking back on my own wedding day, I regret not having it recorded on film. That decision sparked my desire to capture these moments for others however.
Over the years, it’s been a privilege to be welcomed into so many families’ lives at some of their most precious times. I see it as a true responsibility, one that I don’t take lightly because I’m helping to create something that can comfort, uplift, and inspire both now and in the future.
As I think about the legacy these films leave behind, I also reflect on how they affect us personally. They aren’t just for future generations; they’re also a way for us to revisit our happiest memories and remember the people we’ve loved and lost. A wedding film can be both a gift to those who come after us and a piece of solace for ourselves.
I could tell countless stories and share many examples, but the one that resonates most with me is the deep fear of losing the people we cherish. It’s one of life’s most heartbreaking realities. Yet, that’s exactly why creating these wedding films matters so much: they allow us to hold onto the love, warmth, and spirit of those closest to us, even when circumstances change.
Ultimately, wedding films and really any films that capture who we are in our most joyful moments serve a greater purpose. They remind us that our lives and stories are worth celebrating, that our loved ones matter deeply, and that by filming our everyday but beautiful moments, we pass on a legacy of love and connection for generations to come.
