Scottish Barn Wedding at Balfreish Barns || Sweetest of the Sunflowers

There’s something truly special about a barn wedding in Scotland.

The rustic charm, the open countryside, and the intimate atmosphere all combine to create an unforgettable experience. Ryan and Lauren’s wedding at Balfreish Barns was a perfect example of how personal and meaningful a barn wedding can be. Their day was filled with love, music and thoughtful touches, making it a wonderful reflection of who they are as a couple.

A Wedding Day Filled with Personal Touches

This wedding day was all about the little things that made it uniquely theirs. The morning began with Ryan and Lauren getting ready at two different locations however when I walked into Lauren’s prep, I was greeted by the sound of Zach Bryan’s latest album playing—a clear favourite artist of both the bride and groom. We ended up chatting about how much I was enjoying his music, and this connection set a relaxed, personal tone for the day ahead. Something that we always stive for as a wedding videographer; having that relaxed connection allows us to seamlessly capture more detail and love on a wedding day film.

The ceremony, led by humanist celebrant Alicia Macdonald, took place in the peaceful surroundings of Balfreish Barns. One of the standout moments for us was hearing Ryan and Lauren incorporate lyrics from Zach Bryan’s song "Sun to Me" into their vows. The line “Sweetest of the sunflowers, yeah, you're the sun to me” perfectly captured the essence of their relationship, and it inspired the title of their wedding film, "Sweetest of the Sunflowers." These are the kinds of moments that make wedding videos so special to capture—the personal connections that are woven into the day.

Balfreish Barns: A Stunning Venue

For couples looking to host a barn wedding in Scotland, Balfreish Barns is a hidden gem. Nestled in the peaceful countryside of Inverness, this venue is perfect for anyone seeking a setting surrounded by nature while still enjoying modern comforts.

We arrived at Balfreish Barns the day before the wedding, having never filmed there before. The owners, who were hosting a small family event, took the time to personally show us around the venue, which we really appreciated. Their hospitality, combined with the venue’s beautiful blend of rustic charm and elegant touches, made it clear why this place is ideal for intimate weddings. From the well-kept barns to the picturesque surroundings, Balfreish Barns offers an atmosphere that feels both cosy and grand, making it a versatile space for any couple’s vision.

A Celebration of Love, Laughter, and Music

After the ceremony, the celebration moved into the beautifully decorated barn. The florals, sourced by Lauren and her mum, added a personal homemade touch to the day. Virginia’s Vintage Hire provided rustic furniture that gave the reception a welcoming, relaxed feel.

The speeches before dinner were heartfelt and full of emotion, with words from Ryan, his best man Martin, and Lauren’s brother who is also called Martin. These moments brought a lot of laughter, a few tears, and a sense of connection that resonated throughout the day.

As evening fell, the energy picked up with Ryan and Lauren’s first dance which kicked off a ceilidh led by the fantastic Highland Fire Ceilidh band. Guests were up on their feet dancing and enjoying every moment. To top it off, the evening was fuelled by delicious pizzas from Ry’s Slice—a perfect way to keep the party going.

Capturing the Day

Ryan and Lauren wanted to capture their wedding day on film to make sure nothing was missed, especially the moments that might slip by during such a busy day. They mentioned how important it was for them to see the energy of the day come through in the video, and it was a privilege to help preserve those memories.

What stood out most was the genuine connection between Ryan and Lauren—the way they looked at each other during their vows and laughed together throughout the reception. Their wedding was a reminder of why we love being wedding videographers—capturing authentic, personal moments that couples can look back on for years to come. It is why we always regard wedding videos as an investment. We’re not making wedding videos, we’re making memories!
